VAT Solutions was founded by Rob Burton in 2007, with the aim of providing dedicated and independent VAT advice to a range of businesses in the Healthcare sector, from the small entrepreneur through to medium sized businesses and large fully listed multinational clients.

Meet The Team

Rob Burton Director

An indirect tax professional with over 35 years’ experience. Rob began his indirect tax career with HMRC providing VAT assurance on regional and multinational businesses and concluded it with the HMRC Internal Audit Division reporting direct to the Commissioners of HMRC. He joined Arthur Andersen in 1998 specialising in providing VAT advice to a large portfolio of clients ranging from small to medium sized businesses through to large multinational FTSE 100 and Global 500 clients.  He subsequently worked for 3 of the top 4 global professional services firms including Deloitte and now has over 20 years’ experience in the private sector. For 10 years, Rob has specialised in providing indirect tax advice almost exclusively to a range of Health sector clients and as a result has a deep understanding of the care industry and holds strong relationships with local authority finance teams, CCGs and key relationships with other professionals associated with CQC and RQIA in Northern Ireland.

Lynne Gill Senior Indirect Tax Manager

Lynne is an indirect tax specialist with over 35 years experience. She spent 27 years working for HMRC primarily as a VAT inspector initially dealing with small and medium enterprises but latterly with multi-national financial institutions. Lynne moved into the private sector almost 10 years ago where she has dealt with a wide range of businesses and indirect tax issues. Her area of expertise is land and property transactions but she has an extensive knowledge of both domestic and international VAT. Lynne has an Honours degree in business studies and a VAT legal and technical qualification from the Institute of Indirect Taxation.

Kelly Symonds Indirect Tax Manager

Before being asked to join the VAT Solutions team, Kelly worked for 30 years as an employee of HMRC, primarily as a VAT Inspector working with a large and diverse range of businesses ranging from small and medium enterprises to large and complex organisations with varied income streams and intricate VAT liability issues. Kelly has extensive experience in the analysis and interpretation of VAT legislation and HMRC’s related books of guidance obtaining a BTEC diploma in Advanced VAT Assurance along with a number of HMRC Tax Professional qualifications. Kelly has a real passion for health and fitness being a keen runner for over 30 years and having completed various races, most notably finishing first lady in The White Peak Marathon.

Rebecca Hargreaves Contract Manager

Becky joined the team in 2015 after graduating from the University of Sheffield, with a degree in Urban Studies. This provided her with an excellent understanding of the rules & regulations associated with the planning industry. Having been with the company for many years, her role as a Senior VAT Analyst means she has developed a keen and fully rounded knowledge of the sector. She is currently responsible for liaising with local authorities throughout the UK, as well as providing specialist indirect tax analysis.

Rowland Siddall Project Manager

Rowland studied Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Leeds, graduating with a Master’s in 2016. Following University, Rowland completed the engineering graduate training programme at Rolls-Royce in Derby, where he worked in different departments across the business, including spending 6 months working on the Airbus (main customer) site in Toulouse, during which time he was responsible for supporting the test & development of a new product. He was trained in Project Management, and applied this knowledge by managing a variety of individual and team development projects. Upon finishing at Rolls-Royce, Rowland was keen to apply his analytical and Project Management skills in finance, which coupled with his enjoyment of being client facing, led him to a move to VAT Solutions. Over the past year, Rowland has overseen the implementation of Contract Restructuring for a number of our larger clients.

Thomas Hague Contract Manager

Tom studied at the Leeds Business School, graduating in 2016 with a degree in Business and Management. During his studies, Tom spent a year over in the US working for a multinational corporation as part of a sandwich year. This involved working in different departments through the business, with a key part focused on developing investment opportunities with clients. Following graduation, Tom worked in the hospitality industry providing financial support to events across the UK, helping him develop strong analytical skills in the finance sector.

Edward Buchan Indirect Tax Manager

Ed studied Sports Coaching at the University of Gloucestershire, graduating with a Master’s in 2019, during which time he developed a keen interest in data analysis. Ed combined this interest with his longstanding passion for cricket, as he worked for three years as a performance analyst, firstly with Gloucestershire CCC, before moving to Derbyshire CCC. Throughout this period, Ed continually improved his adaptability in data presentation, tailoring to meet different needs. Ed joined VAT Solutions in 2019, keen to develop and implement his skillset in the VAT sector.

Clare Newboult Business Development Manager

Clare has been specialising in business development in the care sector for over fifteen years. Having graduated from the University of Birmingham, she began her career in European finance before moving to a national consultancy with a social care portfolio. From there, she moved on to concentrate on business growth for smaller operations supplying the health and social care sector – ranging from regional to national operators – and exploring development opportunities and routes to market. She has worked closely with multiple cross sector representative organisations, including care associations, charities and national bodies, and is keen to encourage and facilitate shared best practice and knowledge within the health and social care community.
As part of her position within the Vat Solutions team, she is working to promote and encourage the wider understanding within the care sector of the role, and importance, of VAT in its commercial planning strategy

Steve Wasden Contract Manager

Following a successful period as Managing Director of a regional manufacturing company, Steve moved into the charitable sector and was responsible for managing the finances and accounts of a number of charities and associated social enterprise. His broad range of experience includes company formation (in both the private and not for profit sector) and he has direct experience of project/financial management of large capital projects as well as complex cash flow (having worked closely with The European Regional Development Fund). In addition to his detailed knowledge of commercial and charity accounts, Steve brings his passion for problem solving and a breadth of IT skills to the VAT Solutions team.

Maxine Havenhand Book Keeper

After starting her career working at HM Customs & Excise, Maxine moved into the private sector in 2005. Maxine is a qualified book keeper with over 15 years book keeping and accounts experience. She worked for a number of different employers, ranging from sole traders to a national company with multiple sites, before joining VAT Solutions.

Michael Dando Administrative Assistant

A history student at the University of Sheffield, Michael currently combines his studies with an administrative role at VAT Solutions. Prior to starting his undergraduate degree in 2017, Michael served six years as an infantry soldier with the British Army, after which he spent six months working in a customer service role for HMRC. Michael joined our team in 2020, keen to develop his existing skill set whilst gaining valuable experience within the private sector.

Julia Lazar Business Administrator

After completing her post graduate studies in Management at the University of Sheffield Julia’s career has focused on the finance sector. Julia joined VAT Solutions in 2012 and is the first point of contact for the company. She has built up strong relationships with our clients and various government bodies over the years and is responsible for coordinating and supporting the team in bringing projects to completion.
